Woodland Heights Medical Center Now Offering Smart Knee Implant
5/27/2025
Lufkin, Texas – Orthopedic surgeons at Woodland Heights Medical Center are now offering patients a smart knee implant for total knee replacement surgery. The new technology combines the knee implant with sensor technology that measures range of motion, step count, walking speed and other gait metrics.
Once surgery is complete, the knee implant wirelessly transmits a wide range of gait data to a patient’s personal base station at home. The data is then securely delivered to a HIPAA compliant platform and can be accessed by the patient and their surgeon. It allows for a more connected patient experience and for the surgeon to be proactive in the recovery process.
Woodland Heights Medical Center's medical staff includes five independent orthopedic surgeons, Dr. Jason Carter, Dr. Kris McCall, Dr. Peter Ross, Dr. Johnathan Williams and Dr. Andrew Hurst, all practicing at Dedicated Orthopedics of East Texas in Lufkin. All five surgeons are credentialed for the advanced knee replacement procedure.
“We are now able to offer our patients the latest in smart implant technology—advancing total knee replacement into a new era,” said physicians who offer the procedure at Woodland Heights. “Building upon decades of innovation in materials, design, and surgical techniques, these next-generation implants provide objective, patient-specific data that help personalize rehabilitation and optimize recovery. With real-time analysis of gait and range of motion, we can track progress, detect issues earlier, and prevent complications—delivering highly tailored care and elevating outcomes to new heights. And this is just the beginning of what these intelligent implants will bring to the future of orthopedic care.”
When deciding on any surgical treatment plan, your surgeon will consider your current health status and complication risks, your lifestyle and physical demands, and your ability to coordinate the downtime and therapy you will need for recovery in post-surgery. You should be fully open with your doctor about these issues, so they can identify the safest and most beneficial plan of care.
In preparing for surgery, be sure you have considered and shared your concerns, expectations and current medical issues with your surgeon. Millions of people worldwide have improved their lives dramatically thanks to joint replacement surgery.
