First in Deep East Texas to deploy the technology
Lufkin, Texas – Woodland Heights Medical Center is taking another step forward to provide patients with access to surgical procedures performed using the latest technology for minimally invasive robotic-assisted surgery. Woodland Heights has offered robotic assisted surgery since 2012 and currently has two systems utilized by surgeons.
This new technology now being used by Woodland Heights surgeons minimizes trauma to surrounding tissues and can lead to faster recovery times and shorter hospital stays for patients and is the only system of its kind in the Lufkin/Nacogdoches area.
“We are excited to have the newest, robotic surgical tools available at Woodland Heights,” states Darry Meyer, D.O., general surgeon. “I have used this technology for 13 years and have seen the positive impact it makes to patient outcomes and patient satisfaction scores across the procedures I perform. I’m most excited about the improved ergonomics at the surgeon console and the advanced data analytics that give me actionable insights. With greater OR efficiencies, we will be able to offer even more patients in the greater East Texas area the benefits of minimally invasive robotic-assisted surgery.”
Like all robotic systems, the surgeon is in control of the robotic-assisted system, which can be utilized by surgeons in multiple specialties including gynecology and general surgery. The new system now used at Woodland Heights offers numerous enhancements over the previous versions, including enhanced precision with force sensing technology, detailed 3D imaging for surgical viewing and better ergonomics for surgeon comfort.
Obstetrician/gynecologist Dr. Jerry Johnson echoes Dr. Meyer’s excitement. “The new technology offers great enhancements for the patients as it can reduce operating time and time under general anesthesia. The system makes it easier for me to coordinate and control multiple things at once and adapt to better and improved techniques.”
“Minimally invasive surgery can offer incredible benefits for patients, including smaller incisions, less post-op pain, and faster return to daily activities,” states General Surgeon Dr. Ashley McElroy. “I am excited to have this technology available here in Lufkin so that we can continue to provide advanced care to our patients.”
This investment demonstrates Woodland Heights Medical Center’s commitment to providing patients from throughout deep East Texas with the highest standard of care.
“Our team brings extensive experience to the operating room, having performed robotic surgeries at Woodland Heights Medical Center since 2012—with over 700 cases completed in 2024 alone,” said Jose Echavarria, CEO of Woodland Heights Medical Center. “We are constantly seeking advancements in technology and practices that elevate the quality of care we provide to our patients.”
