Woodland Heights Offers Innovative Sleep Apnea Solution in Lufkin/Nacogdoches
Lufkin, Texas (June 23, 2025) – Woodland Heights Medical Center is committed to helping patients get a better night's sleep, offering a surgical treatment for those who suffer from Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).
Patricia Cox is one of an estimated 30 million American adults who suffer from OSA. After years of struggling with sleep apnea and unsuccessful attempts to use multiple CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) machines due to claustrophobia and discomfort, she turned to Woodland Heights Medical Center for a different solution—surgical therapy designed for patients who cannot tolerate CPAP.
This innovative treatment works in harmony with the body’s natural breathing patterns. A small device implanted in the body delivers gentle stimulation to keep the airway open during sleep, allowing for normal breathing. Patients simply use a handheld remote to activate the device at bedtime and turn it off when they wake.
“We have seen tremendous success with this treatment,” states Patricia McAdams, MD, who performed Cox’s surgery. “Mrs. Cox is a true testament to how this approach can significantly improve quality of life.”
Dr. McAdams is one of the three independent ENT surgeons on Woodland Heights Medical Center’s medical staff, which also includes Dr. Brian Humphreys and Dr. Q . Jimmy Pham, all practicing at Lufkin ENT & Allergy.
More than two years after her procedure, Patricia says the impact has been life-changing.
“I lived with sleep apnea for over seven years, and it took a real toll—not just on my sleep, but on my husband’s as well,” she shared. “After doing my research and speaking with my doctor, I’m so glad I made the decision. My energy levels have improved significantly, and my daytime sleepiness is almost gone.”
Woodland Heights Medical Center is the only local hospital offering this advanced therapy, performed by a board-certified otolaryngologist (ENT specialist). “The expertise and dedication of our local ENT surgeons are what make this service possible,” said Jose Echavarria, CEO of Woodland Heights. “We’re proud to offer a solution that’s improving sleep - and lives - for patients in deep East Texas.”
