Woodland Heights offers new therapy equipment and techniques

Woodland Heights Medical Center now offers a more specialized technique in the treatment of dysphagia, which is difficulty or the inability to swallow. The hospital recently acquired the VitalStim® Therapy System.  This system is a non-invasive, external electrical stimulation therapy to be used in conjunction with traditional swallowing therapy.  Click HERE to read more.

Acute Care Inpatient Services

The rehabilitation team at Woodland Heights consists of highly skilled clinicians from a variety of fields who work together to meet our patients' needs. Our licensed therapy services staff provides physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech/language pathology to those patients in the hospital setting to help restore maximum level of function. Each patient has access to a case manager to assist with their social and discharge needs and dieticians to assist patient's dietary needs required for maximal healing and recovery.

The rehabilitation team strives to meet the needs of our patients and their families through:

  • Individualized interdisciplinary assessment, diagnosis, treatment, education and training for patient, family, and/or provider
     
  • A caring, compassionate and vigorous environment toward achieving maximum level of ability
     
  • A coordinated team approach among physician, nursing, case management and therapy services
     
  • Therapy is provided in the patient's room as well as a gym area located on the 2nd floor of the hospital near the skilled nursing unit
     
  • A continuum of care from acute inpatient services to our 13 bed skilled nursing unit for stays requiring more complex or longer recovery periods
     
  • Our therapy gym includes exercise equipment for strengthening, special mats and tables, stairs, and parallel bars. We also have an ADL friendly bathroom, available kitchen access, and hydrotherapy and wound care area.
     
  • Availability for pre-operative training (Joint Camp) for patients undergoing Total Knee, Total Hip or Total Shoulder replacement procedures – which is coordinated with our Outpatient Rehabilitation Center.
     
  • For higher level patients a continuum of care from acute inpatient services to our comprehensive Outpatient Rehabilitation Center

Physical Therapy

Physical Therapist and Physical Therapist Assistants work with patients on decreasing pain, increasing range of motion and improving strength to enable themselves and/or caregivers to perform the functional mobility and locomotion required to return to home or the next level of care after hospitalization. Physical Therapists also work in conjunction with our physician and nursing staff to provide wound care services.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapist and Occupational Therapist Assistants focus on assisting patients to regain arm and hand strength/control and improve independence with activities of daily living such as bathing, grooming and dressing. With some diagnosis and surgical procedures, the Occupational Therapists teach patients and families adaptive techniques to assist in overcoming disability and challenges.

Speech Language Pathology

Speech Therapists work with a variety of conditions to help patients communicate effectively and regain safe feeding and swallowing function. Speech therapists utilize several communication strategies and adaptive techniques for problem solving to assist patients and caregivers. Speech therapists work with our physicians, dieticians and the nursing staff to evaluate swallowing mechanisms and recommend a safe feeding strategy to optimize the patient's recovery.

Outpatient Rehabilitation Services

Our outpatient rehabilitation services include Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech Therapy disciplines. Our outpatient rehabilitation center is located at 521 North Brentwood Dr. off U.S. 59 between Sam's Club and Tractor Supply. Outpatient rehabilitation serves patients who require additional therapy after being discharged from the hospital as well as those with permanent or temporary medical conditions or injuries not requiring hospitalization. When your activity and functional levels have been diminished due to illness or injury, our rehabilitation professionals and programs can help restore what was lost and maximize your potential to return available function. Patients need only be referred by their physicians to take advantage of our facility and services. We serve all age groups from pediatrics to geriatrics. Hours of operation are Monday to Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM and our phone number is 632-BODY (2639).

Physical Therapy

Evaluation and treatment for problems associated with mobility, balance, coordination and musculoskeletal pain. Physical Therapists work on rebuilding the strength, flexibility and function of persons recovering from orthopedic injuries, surgery, stroke and other neurological conditions, or those living with chronic conditions. Services provided include:

  • Gait and mobility training
  • Therapeutic exercise
  • Joint Camp and Total Joint Rehabilitation
  • Modalities (moist heat, cold, E-stim, TENS, ultrasound, fluidotherapy)
  • Industrial Rehabilitation and Conditioning
  • Neuromuscular re-education for stroke and neurological conditions
  • Spine stabilization
  • Patient and family education
  • Pediatric Therapy

Occupational and Hand Therapy

Occupational Therapist assists patients with independent performance of daily living activities such as cooking, dressing, bathing, as well as exercises to strengthen hands and arms when upper extremity function is impaired by fractures, nerve injuries, tendonitis or post surgical conditions. The focus of occupational therapy is to help patients regain their independence in activities of daily living. Services include:

  • ADL training
  • Therapeutic exercise
  • Modalities (moist heat, cold, E-stim, TENS, ultrasound, fluidotherapy)
  • Splinting
  • Neuromuscular re-education for stroke and neurological conditions
  • Patient and family education
  • Cognitive retraining
  • Pediatric Therapy

Speech Language Pathology

Speech Therapists help patients regain language and thinking skills, learn alternative ways to communicate and assists with swallowing and hearing difficulties. Speech Therapists integrate a variety of techniques and strategies to maximize a person's potential for communication, cognition and safe swallowing function. Services include:

  • Speech & communication assessment
  • Swallowing evaluation and treatment

The Rehabilitation Center

Aftercare Program

The aftercare program allows Physical and Occupational therapy patients to maintain the strength and flexibility achieved through their supervised rehabilitation program. Personalized home and/or aftercare programs are available once the prescribed therapy program is complete. The former patient can use the same equipment to progress "on their own" and take ownership in their recovery. Individuals in the aftercare program pay a small fee based on their usage of the program.

Industrial Rehabilitation and Reconditioning

Our Industrial Rehabilitation program includes both preventative and post injury measures. We can assist with measuring physical demands for job descriptions, job site analysis for ergonomic assessment, back safety and body mechanics education classes and implementation of wellness services.

Post injury we provide Physical and Occupational Therapy to assist with returning workers to the workplace safely. We provide orthopedic therapy services and can utilize work-conditioning programs to graduate patients from the therapy clinic back to the work place. Functional Capacity Evaluations are also available in one day, two day or job specific formats.
